ANNOUNCEMENTS
07.08.2024
On August 7, 2024, we lost a person who embodied the essence, roots, and spirit of Russian Speaking Jewish Studies, Mikhail Anatolyevich Chlenov (September 26, 1940 - August 7, 2024).
Not only his three children, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren mourn him, not only the "Sefer" Center, of which he was the chairman of the Academic Council for many years, but also countless colleagues, students, readers of his works, and listeners of his courses — we all feel orphaned.
A man of immense erudition and diverse scientific interests, he possessed a rare sense of humor, an unconventional way of thinking, and a balanced system of values far removed from radicalism.
If we were to apply an age-old system of personality descriptions, he could be described as a sage or as a rebbe to whom people turn for advice.
Too many living today are grateful to Mikhail Anatolyevich for their academic careers and the direction of their scholarly interests. Contemporary ethnographers thank him for his guidance and counsel. Perhaps this is how traditio — the transmission — takes place, and Mikhail Anatolyevich's teachings will endure through the ages.
